Kalaemomona

Waipiʻo, Hāmākua

Located at the point of Mokuwai, this ʻāina lovingly named Kalaemomona, “The Bountiful Point”, was first reclaimed from the jungle and reopened for educational programs including the soon to be realized “Hālau Waipiʻo”, which will be a constructed a traditional Hale (house) for the gathering of cultural practitioners to share, grow, practice, engage in ceremony and other traditions. 

Partners: the Pahio/Tagabi Ohana

Goals:

  • Provide a safe, clean, and educational space for ohana, hālau, schools, and educational programs to learn, and engage with this wahi pana ʻo Waipiʻo

  • Restore the loʻi kalo cultivation on the property as well as other diverse crops.

  • Mālama kahawai project works to help support the health of the river life using traditional practices of fish house construction, feedings, gathering and river maintenance.  

  • Waʻa Waipiʻo, Provides the space for canoe culture to return to Waipiʻo to care for the river, and strengthen the relationship of people to the waters of Waipiʻo.

  • “Hālau Waipiʻo”, constructs a traditional Hale (house) for the gathering of cultural practitioners to share, grow, practice, engage in ceremony and other traditions.
